Thapsos
Archaeological Site Ancient Sicilian Bronze Age village and necropolis
Thapsos on Sicily’s east coast is an ancient coastal settlement and cemetery with Bronze Age and Greek-era remains. Tourists visit archaeological remains, necropoleis and combine the site with nearby Mediterranean beaches and towns.
Thapsos is an archaeological site on the southeast coast of Sicily associated with a Middle Bronze Age settlement and cemetery. It is the type site for the Thapsos cultural horizon that archaeologists use to describe material from this period on the island.
Excavated remains include settlement traces and burial areas that have produced characteristic pottery and grave goods. The site is relatively small and less visited than Sicily’s major Greek ruins, so highlights are archaeological trenches and surface remains rather than large standing monuments.
The settlement was occupied during the Bronze Age and is known mainly through archaeological excavation and typological study of finds. Modern investigation has defined the Thapsos cultural assemblage and its place in Sicilian prehistory.
The site sits on the eastern Sicilian coast, in the general Syracuse area of Sicily. It is accessed from the regional road network serving the Syracuse province.
- Thapsos culture: An archaeological cultural complex from the Middle Bronze Age that gave its name to the regional Thapsos culture.
