Teylers Museum in Haarlem is a late-18th-century museum of art and science founded from the estate of Pieter Teyler van der Hulst; its historic rooms date to the 1780s and it is one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands.

The museum’s historic Oval Room houses original displays of scientific instruments, books, and cabinets of curiosities from the Enlightenment era, while adjacent galleries present fossil and mineral collections and a collection of paintings, drawings, and prints. Exhibits emphasize the intersection of art and science and include original 18th- and 19th-century instruments and specimens.

Created by a private foundation established in 1778, the museum was built to combine public access to art, natural history, and scientific instruments; its core rooms and collections were assembled in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and have been preserved with later curatorial additions. The institution has operated continuously in Haarlem and retains much of its historic interior and display furniture.

The museum sits on the Spaarne river in central Haarlem, in North Holland, about 20 kilometers west of Amsterdam and within walking distance of Haarlem’s Grote Markt.

  • Founding: Established by the legacy of Pieter Teyler van der Hulst; the foundation that created the museum dates to 1778 and the museum spaces opened in the 1780s, making it one of the oldest museum institutions in the Netherlands.
