Teylers Museum in Haarlem is a late-18th-century museum of art and science founded from the estate of Pieter Teyler van der Hulst; its historic rooms date to the 1780s and it is one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands.
The museum’s historic Oval Room houses original displays of scientific instruments, books, and cabinets of curiosities from the Enlightenment era, while adjacent galleries present fossil and mineral collections and a collection of paintings, drawings, and prints. Exhibits emphasize the intersection of art and science and include original 18th- and 19th-century instruments and specimens.
Created by a private foundation established in 1778, the museum was built to combine public access to art, natural history, and scientific instruments; its core rooms and collections were assembled in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and have been preserved with later curatorial additions. The institution has operated continuously in Haarlem and retains much of its historic interior and display furniture.
The museum sits on the Spaarne river in central Haarlem, in North Holland, about 20 kilometers west of Amsterdam and within walking distance of Haarlem’s Grote Markt.

How to Get to Teylers Museum #
Teylers Museum is in the centre of Haarlem on the Spaarne river, a short walk from Haarlem train station. From Haarlem Centraal it’s about a 7-12 minute walk (roughly 600-900 m) into the old town and Grote Markt area where the museum sits. From Amsterdam Centraal take a regular NS train to Haarlem (about 15-20 minutes by intercity or sprinter), then walk from Haarlem station.
Tips for Visiting Teylers Museum #
- Book or arrive at opening time to see the Oval Room and scientific cabinets before the crowds arrive - the central Oval Room has limited capacity and is much calmer early on.
- Give extra time to the upstairs display cases of fossils, minerals and early instruments; many visitors concentrate on the ground-floor highlights and miss these quieter, historically important rooms.
- If possible, purchase tickets in advance or check for timed entry - the museum is compact and controlled entry helps avoid bottlenecks in the Oval Room.
