Ter (river)
Stream Catalan river flowing through Girona province to Mediterranean
Through Catalonia the Ter River flows from the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean valley, threading Girona province and rice plains. Tourists kayak, fish and visit riverside towns with Romanesque churches and medieval bridges.
The Ter is a river in Catalonia, northeastern Spain, originating in the eastern Pyrenees and flowing to the Mediterranean. It is roughly 208 kilometres long and is one of the principal rivers of the Catalan interior.
The river valley offers several man-made reservoirs and scenic narrow gorges; the Pante0 de Sau is a popular viewpoint where a partially submerged church can be seen when water levels are low. The river also passes through the city of Girona, where promenades and bridges follow the river through the historic quarter.
The Ter has long been a focus for settlement and water management in Catalonia. Over the 20th century several dams and reservoirs were constructed for water supply, irrigation and hydroelectricity, altering the river’s natural flow and creating the lakes seen today.
The river rises in the eastern Pyrenees in Catalonia and flows southeast through towns including Ripoll and Girona before reaching the Mediterranean coast. It lies within the autonomous community of Catalonia in northeastern Spain.
- Reservoirs: Several dams and reservoirs along the course create scenic lakes and regulate flow, the most visited being the Sau reservoir with the submerged church visible in dry periods.
- Course: Flows from the eastern Pyrenees through Ripoll and Girona before reaching the Mediterranean, making it important for regional water supply and ecology.
What to See #
- Pante0 de Sau (Sau Reservoir): A reservoir created by damming the river, notable for the partially submerged church of Sant Rome0 de Sau which becomes visible at low water levels and is a well-known photo spot.
- Susqueda Reservoir: A major reservoir and dam on the river that is used for water supply and hydroelectric generation and lies upstream from Girona.
- Girona riverfront: The stretch through the city includes riverfront promenades and bridges where the river flows past the historic centre and botanical gardens.
