Tenczyn Castle
Castle Ruined medieval castle in Lesser Poland Voivodeship
Above the Rudno valley, Tenczyn Castle preserves 14th‑century ruins along the Eagle Nests Trail. Visitors come for medieval masonry, archaeological remains, hiking routes and panoramic views of Lesser Poland’s limestone landscape.
Tenczyn Castle (Zamek Tenczyn) is a ruined medieval castle near the village of Rudno in Lesser Poland Voivodeship, built as the stronghold of the Tęczyński family from the 14th century. It is a regional landmark for its defensive position on a limestone ridge and its ruined towers and walls.
Visitors encounter the surviving stone keep, stretches of curtain wall and the footprint of palace ranges set on a wooded hill. The ridge location gives clear views over surrounding valleys and the small towns of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland.
Founded by the Tęczyński family in the 14th century, the castle was expanded in later medieval and early modern periods and damaged during the 17th-century conflicts and subsequent fires. Over centuries of decline it fell into ruin and has been subject to limited conservation rather than full reconstruction.
The castle perches above the village of Rudno, near Krzeszowice and roughly 30 km west of Kraków, within the rolling limestone hills of southern Poland.
- Access: Reached by hiking trails and local roads from the nearby village of Rudno, it sits on a wooded limestone ridge that provides panoramic views of the Prądnik valley.
- Visitor note: The site is a ruin with limited facilities; wear sturdy shoes as many sections are uneven and unsecured.
What to See #
- Keep and curtain walls: A surviving keep and fragmentary curtain walls form the highest, most visible parts of the ruin and offer the principal viewpoints over the surrounding countryside.
- Gatehouse: Gatehouse and entrance range that once controlled access to the inner ward; much of the defensive entrance survives in ruined form.
- Palace wing: Palace and residential ranges that stood along the courtyard; these survive only as foundations and partial masonry but show the castle's former domestic scale.

- Time your visit for late afternoon light if you want dramatic photos of the ruin and surrounding parkland, and allow extra time to explore nearby walking paths in the Tenczynek area rather than expecting an extensive onsite visitor centre.
