Temple of Zeus, Olympia

The Temple of Zeus at Olympia is a Classical Greek temple in the sanctuary of Olympia in the Peloponnese, constructed in the mid-5th century BC and famed for originally housing Phidias’ statue of Zeus.

Built during the Classical period, the temple served as the principal cult building for Zeus at Olympia and was decorated with sculptural programs; the chryselephantine statue by Phidias was a central religious and artistic feature. The sanctuary was abandoned and fell into ruin in late antiquity; systematic archaeological investigation began in the 19th century and continues to inform understanding of the site.

The temple stands within the archaeological site of Olympia in western Peloponnese, Greece, inland from the Ionian coast and reached from the regional town of Ancient Olympia.
