Temple of Vesta
Archaeological Site Ancient circular Roman temple in the Roman Forum
A small circular temple ruin near the Roman Forum’s eastern edge, traditionally linked to the Vestal Virgins and ancient rituals. Visitors include archaeology buffs touring the Forum, Palatine Hill and nearby Colosseum ruins.
The Temple of Vesta is an ancient circular Roman temple located in the Roman Forum in Rome, dedicated to the goddess Vesta. It is closely associated with the Vestal Virgins and the sacred public flame that was central to Roman state religion.
The temple’s small, round plan and columnar perimeter are characteristic; its ruins visible today belong to a sequence of Republican and Imperial rebuilds and restorations. The structure served a religious and ceremonial function rather than a domestic or administrative one.
The temple was constructed in the early periods of Rome’s history and was rebuilt several times across the Republican and Imperial eras following fires and restorations. Control and ritual use of the site were historically tied to the college of Vestal Virgins and to Roman state religion.
It stands in the central archaeological area of the Roman Forum, immediately in front of the Regia and near other major Republican-era monuments in the heart of ancient Rome.
- Religious role: The temple formed part of the ritual area of the Roman Forum and was associated with the Vestal Virgins and the sacred public hearth.

Tips for Visiting Temple of Vesta #
- Visit the Roman Forum early in the morning right when it opens to photograph the Temple of Vesta's circular foundations with far fewer people and softer light.
- Enter the Forum via the Palatine Hill/Foro entrance (rather than the Colosseum's busiest gate) to start on the quieter Palatine side and work toward the Temple of Vesta with fewer crowds.
- Buy a combined Colosseum-Forum-Palatine ticket in advance so you avoid separate lines; many visitors overlook the small nearby ruins (the House of the Vestals and the Regia) that give context to the temple's location.
