Temple of Venus Genetrix
Monument Ancient Roman temple in the Forum of Caesar
In Rome’s Forum of Caesar, Julius Caesar dedicated a temple to Venus Genetrix; foundations and fragments survive among the forum excavations. Tourists visit for Roman archaeology and a direct look at imperial-era building campaigns.
The Temple of Venus Genetrix was built by Julius Caesar in the Forum of Caesar in Rome and was dedicated to Venus as the ancestral goddess of the gens Julia. The foundation of the temple marked both a religious dedication and a statement of political legitimacy.
Remains of the temple’s podium and foundations survive within the area of the Imperial fora; fragments and reused architectural elements are visible in the archaeological layers of the Forum. The temple contained a cult statue and functioned as a family shrine for the Julian clan.
Caesar commissioned and completed the temple in the mid first century BCE and it subsequently formed part of the built complex known as the Forum of Caesar. Over time it was altered, repaired and incorporated into later Imperial building phases and the changing urban fabric of Rome.
The temple is located in central Rome at the northwest end of the Roman Forum, in the complex of the Forum of Caesar near the Theater of Marcellus and the modern Via dei Fori Imperiali.
- Built 46 BCE: Erected by Julius Caesar and consecrated in 46 BCE as a civic and religious foundation honoring Venus Genetrix, the temple served as both a cult site and a political symbol.
