Temple of Trajan
Archaeological Site Imperial Roman temple in Trajan's Forum, archaeological ruins
Associated with Trajan’s Forum, the Temple of Trajan formed part of an imperial complex in ancient Rome; visitors come to see Trajan’s Column, forum ruins and urban planning of the period.
The Temple of Trajan was a Roman imperial temple located within the complex known as Trajan’s Forum in central Rome. It commemorated the deified Emperor Trajan and formed part of the early 2nd century AD forum ensemble.
Today the temple survives mainly in foundations and fragmentary remains visible within the archaeological area of Trajan’s Forum, which also contains Trajan’s Column and the remains of the Basilica Ulpia. The site is examined as part of the broader Imperial Fora route rather than as an isolated monumental ruin.
The temple was constructed as part of Trajan’s Forum complex after Emperor Trajan’s death in the early 2nd century AD to honor his imperial cult. Over subsequent centuries the structure fell into ruin and the visible remains today are largely archaeological fragments consolidated by modern excavation.
The temple’s remains lie in central Rome on the site of Trajan’s Forum, near the Via dei Fori Imperiali and adjacent to Trajan’s Column in the Lazio region of Italy.
