Temple Imperial Roman forum dedicated to peace, temple remains
Near the Imperial Forums, the Temple of Peace (Templum Pacis) dates to Vespasian’s era and yields marble and sculptural fragments; visitors trace imperial Rome on site and along Via dei Fori Imperiali.
The Temple of Peace, commonly called the Forum of Vespasian or Templum Pacis, is an Imperial-era complex in central Rome founded by Emperor Vespasian and dedicated in 75 CE. It combined gardened open space with monumental architecture and served civic and commemorative functions.
The complex contained a large paved courtyard, colonnades and collections of artwork and treasures assembled after the Jewish War; these displays gave it some functions of a public museum alongside its religious and commemorative roles. Substantial masonry, long enclosing walls and fragments of colonnades remain visible today.
Constructed as part of Vespasian’s building program following civil war and foreign campaigns, the forum reflected the emperor’s political and propagandistic aims. Over the centuries the site fell into ruin and its materials were reused, but the footprint and surviving walls preserve its original scale and layout.
The remains lie between the Palatine and Esquiline hills in the heart of Rome, within the cluster of Imperial fora and a short walk from the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.
- Dedication date: Dedicated by Emperor Vespasian in 75 CE and known also as the Forum of Vespasian, it housed imperial collections and spoils of war.
