The Temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens, often called the Olympieion, is a monumental ancient temple whose construction began in the 6th century BCE and was completed by the Roman emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century CE. It was once one of the largest temples in the ancient Greek world.
The site is notable for its remaining colossal Corinthian columns and the temple’s original plan, which reflected ambitions on a scale larger than most Greek temples. Visitors typically view the surviving columns and the temple platform from the surrounding archaeological area and adjacent roads.
Construction began under the Peisistratid tyrants in the 6th century BCE, continued intermittently under later Hellenistic rulers, and was finally completed by Hadrian around 131-132 CE who dedicated the finished temple. Over time the temple was quarried and partially ruined, leaving the fragmentary colonnade visible today.
