Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus
Archaeological Site Principal ancient Roman temple on the Capitoline Hill
Site of Rome’s principal ancient temple on the Capitoline Hill, known from Republican and Imperial sources; only limited foundations and platform survive within the Capitoline complex.
The Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus occupied the summit of the Capitoline Hill in ancient Rome and was the city’s principal state temple, dedicated to Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. Tradition places the first foundation in the early Roman monarchy; the temple was rebuilt several times over the Republican and Imperial periods.
Architectural traces and written sources attest that the temple had a large high podium and a multi-cella plan for the Capitoline Triad; it functioned as the focal point of state cult and important civic ceremonies. Successive reconstructions followed fires and other damage across centuries.
The temple’s origin is traditionally attributed to the late 6th century BCE in Roman tradition, and later rebuildings are documented in Republican and Imperial sources; its remains are mainly visible as substructures and foundations today, integrated into the archaeological fabric of the Capitoline Hill.
The site sits at the top of the Capitoline Hill overlooking the Roman Forum in central Rome.
- Religious significance: Dedicated to the Capitoline Triad of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, it was Rome's chief state temple and the symbolic religious centre of the city.
