Temple of Jupiter
Temple Ancient temple dedicated to Jupiter in Campania
On Pompeii’s forum, the Temple of Jupiter anchors the town’s ritual center with Roman columns and podium; visitors pair the temple with excavations and Mount Vesuvius views.
The Temple of Jupiter in Pompeii is a Roman temple on the city’s main forum in Campania, dedicated to the Capitoline Triad of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. It served as the principal civic-religious building in Pompeii.
Sited on a high podium at the north end of the forum, the temple presents a pronounced frontal approach with a deep pronaos and a raised cella. The temple’s façade with its tall columns dominates the open forum space and creates clear sightlines from the forum pavement.
Constructed during the Roman Republican and early imperial periods, the structure was altered and repaired over time as Pompeii developed as a civic center. It remained an important cult and civic focus until the city’s burial by the AD 79 eruption of Vesuvius.
The temple sits within the archaeological remains of Pompeii, immediately adjacent to the excavated forum area in the modern archaeological park and town of Pompeii, Campania.
- Best viewpoint: Located on the raised podium of Pompeii's forum, the temple is best viewed from the open forum area where the full frontal elevation is visible.
- When to go: Visit early in the day to avoid crowds that concentrate along the forum walkways and to see sunlight on the temple's frontal columns.
