Temple of Cybele (Palatine)
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman temple on the Palatine Hill
On Rome’s Palatine Hill, the Temple of Cybele (Magna Mater) survives in fragmentary foundations; visitors combine the site with Colosseum and Forum walks to study Republican and Imperial layers.
The Temple of Cybele on the Palatine Hill in Rome was a sanctuary dedicated to the Anatolian-origin goddess Cybele, worshipped in Rome as Magna Mater. The cult was introduced to the city in 204 BCE and the temple on the Palatine became the Roman seat for the goddess’s official worship.
The temple complex and its associated rites were woven into Rome’s public religion; historical sources link the arrival of the cult to specific events in the Republican period. The Palatine temple was an urban cult site integrated within the elite precincts of the hill.
Over time the temple was repaired and rebuilt, and its remains today are largely preserved as archaeological foundations and podiums within the Palatine archaeological area. The site has been studied in relation to Rome’s religious and urban topography.
Located on Rome’s Palatine Hill, the temple site sits among other imperial and archaic period remains in central Rome, within walking distance of the Roman Forum and other principal ancient monuments.
