Constructed in the early medieval period using stone and decorative elements taken from nearby Roman buildings, the small temple-like chapel has been repaired and conserved over centuries while preserving its composite classical-medieval character. Its continuous recognition rests on the visible mix of ancient materials and early medieval building practice.
Situated in rural Umbria beside the Clitunno stream, the tempietto lies close to the village of Campello sul Clitunno and is accessible by road from the Umbrian towns of Spoleto and Foligno.
