Temple of Athena (Syracuse)

The Temple of Athena in Syracuse is an ancient Greek temple whose foundations and column fragments are incorporated into the later Cathedral of Syracuse on the island of Ortigia. The temple dates to the classical period, commonly assigned to the 5th century BC.

Visitors encounter Doric stonework and portions of the temple’s cella embedded in the fabric of the Cathedral of Syracuse, with classical columns visible along parts of the church interior and exterior. The remains are set around Piazza del Duomo, which provides direct close-up views and photographic access.

Originally built as a Greek temple in the classical period, the structure was progressively converted into a Christian church in the early medieval era and subsequently rebuilt and modified by later architects. The cathedral preserves the earlier temple’s stone elements as part of its walls and supports.

The site stands on Ortigia, the historic island core of Syracuse on Sicily’s east coast, directly on Piazza del Duomo in the city centre.
