The Temple of Apollo in Pompeii is an ancient temple located in the city forum of Pompeii, Campania. It is among the oldest surviving temples in the site and reflects the city’s long-standing religious traditions.

The temple precinct contains classical columns, podium remains and architectural elements associated with public cult practice in Pompeii; it sits amid the forum ensemble and is approached by the forum’s paved space. The temple is interpreted within the broader archaeological context of the city and is visited as part of the Pompeii excavations.

The structure has origins in the Greek and Italic religious traditions of the city and was adapted and rebuilt through the Hellenistic and Roman Republican periods; the building as seen today preserves phases of modification prior to the AD 79 eruption of Vesuvius. The site was buried by the eruption and later exposed by modern excavations.

The temple stands in the Forum of the archaeological site of Pompeii, near modern Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples; Pompeii lies to the southeast of the city of Naples.

  • Forum location: The temple stands in the Forum of Pompeii and is one of the site's earliest and most prominent religious buildings, located close to other major civic monuments.

  • Enter Pompeii via the Porta Marina or Piazza Esedra (near the train station) to reach the forum and the Temple of Apollo quickly - mornings are coolest and least crowded.

  • Don't skip the small museum rooms adjacent to the forum - they hold plaster casts and finds that bring the temple's ritual life into focus.
