The Temple of Apollo on Naxos is an unfinished Archaic Greek temple whose remaining monumental gateway is commonly called the Portara. It sits at the entrance to Naxos harbour and dates to the late 6th century BC.

The most striking feature is a single, massive marble doorway standing alone on the islet of Palatia, visible from the harbour and adjacent promenade. The site is compact and easily reached on foot from Naxos town, and it is widely used as a viewpoint for sunset and coastal views.

Construction began in the late 6th century BC, during the Archaic period, but the temple was never completed. The surviving doorway is the principal remnant of the original structure and has served as a landmark through subsequent centuries.

The ruin occupies the islet of Palatia at the entrance to the harbour of Naxos town (Chora) in the South Aegean region of Greece, immediately adjacent to the island’s main port.

  • Best time to visit: Sunset is the most popular time for photographs, when the Portara silhouettes against the Aegean light.
  • Access: A short causeway links the islet to Naxos town, making the site an easy walk from the harbourfront.
