Main image

The Temple of Aphaia is an ancient Doric temple on the eastern end of the island of Aegina, Greece, dating to the early 5th century BC. It is one of the finest preserved examples of late Archaic Doric architecture in the Aegean.

The temple is a hexastyle peripteral Doric building with six columns on the short sides and twelve on the long sides, set on a raised terraced acropolis with views over the Saronic Gulf. Its pedimental sculptures are celebrated examples of the period’s figural relief work and attract interest for their style and conservation.

Built as a sanctuary dedicated to the local goddess Aphaia, the standing ruins date to around 500-480 BC and replaced an earlier temple on the same site. Fragments of its sculptural decoration were removed in the 19th century and are now in European museums, while the temple foundations and column drums remain at the site.

The temple occupies a ridge at the eastern tip of Aegina island, a short drive from Aegina town and visible from surrounding coastal roads. The site is approached by a minor road and offers panoramic views across nearby islands of the Saronic Gulf.

  • Best time to visit: Best light for photography is late afternoon, when the temple stands out against views of the Saronic Gulf.
  • Sculptures: Most original pedimental sculptures recovered from the site are held in museums in Munich; copies are on display at the archaeological site.

How to Get to Temple of Aphaia #

The Temple of Aphaia sits on the eastern side of Aegina island. From Athens, take a regular ferry or a high-speed ferry from Piraeus port to Aegina town (ferries run frequently; conventional ferries typically take under 90 minutes, high-speed services around 40-60 minutes). From Aegina port the temple is about 8-12 km by road to the northeast of the town; you can reach it by taxi or the island’s local bus/tour services (a 15-25 minute drive), with a short walk from the roadside car park up to the temple site.

Tips for Visiting Temple of Aphaia #

  • Arrive early morning or late afternoon to avoid the bulk of day‑trip ferries from Piraeus-those time windows also provide better light for photographing the temple and the surrounding Saronic Gulf.
  • Take the local bus or a short taxi from Aegina town (Aegina port) rather than relying on rental cars; parking near the archaeological site is limited and the walk up to the temple ridge is short and rewarding.
  • Don't skip the short ridge walk behind the temple-many visitors focus only on the ruins, but a brief walk along the ridge gives expansive views back to the Saronic Gulf and (on clear days) toward the Athens coastline.
