Temple of Antoninus and Faustina
Temple Ancient Roman temple in the Forum, later converted church
Roman temple in the Forum Romanum, dedicated to Emperor Antoninus Pius and Faustina; its columns and cella were later integrated into a medieval church, visible amid Forum ruins.
The Temple of Antoninus and Faustina stands on the Roman Forum in Rome and dates to the mid-2nd century AD, originally dedicated to the emperor Antoninus Pius and his wife Faustina. Its well-preserved row of Corinthian columns and high podium remain a conspicuous feature in the Forum.
The temple’s facade retains a portion of the original entablature and columns; during the Middle Ages the structure was converted to a Christian church, which helped preserve much of the stonework. The conversion altered some internal spaces but left the external temple form largely visible.
The building was erected by Antoninus Pius shortly after the death of Faustina in 141 AD and was rededicated to both Antoninus and Faustina after the emperor’s death. It has remained an important architectural witness to the Roman Forum’s imperial period.
The temple is located on the eastern side of the Roman Forum, adjacent to the via Sacra and near other major forum monuments.
- Later use: The temple was erected by the imperial household in the 2nd century AD and later converted into the church of San Lorenzo in Miranda, which contributed to its preservation.
