Tejo Power Station
Archaeological Site Riverside former power station landmark in Lisbon
The Tejo Power Station on Lisbon’s riverfront preserves industrial architecture and large-scale machinery as exhibition space. Visitors tour former turbine halls, learn about Portugal’s electrification and stroll the Tagus riverside.
The Tejo Power Station is a former thermal power complex on the north bank of the Tagus in Lisbon’s Belém district, notable for its large industrial brick buildings and plant installations. Parts of the site have been repurposed for cultural and museum use.
The complex presents large-scale industrial spaces including turbine and boiler halls and tall chimneys that are prominent on the Belém riverfront. Some interior areas have been adapted for exhibitions and public access, allowing viewing of early 20th-century power-station engineering at close range.
Built to supply electricity to Lisbon during the era of industrial expansion, the plant operated as a thermal power station through much of the 20th century before being taken out of commercial service and re-used for cultural and museum functions.
Situated on the Tagus riverside in the Belém district of Lisbon, the site lies among a cluster of riverside cultural institutions and is visible from the Belém promenade.
