Teide National Park
Park Volcanic national park surrounding Spain's highest peak
Teide National Park centers on Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak, with volcanic calderas, lava fields, a cable car to near the summit and clear skies favoured for stargazing.
Teide National Park is a protected volcanic landscape on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, centred on Mount Teide, the highest mountain in Spain at 3,718 metres. The park preserves a range of volcanic formations, lava fields and endemic flora across an otherworldly terrain.
Visitors come for the volcanic scenery, hiking routes, the Roques de García rock formations and panoramic views from high-elevation points. A cable car rises to an upper station around 3,555 metres, giving access to viewpoints near the summit area; summit access above the cable car terminal requires a special permit.
The park was designated a national park in 1954 and later inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its geological value. Scientific interest, distinctive ecosystems and cultural associations with the island’s history contribute to its protected status.
Teide National Park occupies the central plateau of Tenerife; the nearest major towns are Puerto de la Cruz and Los Cristianos/Playa de las Américas on the coast, with Santa Cruz de Tenerife about 50 to 60 kilometres away depending on route.
- Protection: The park was established as a national park in 1954 and is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its geological and volcanic significance.
- Stargazing and weather: Clear skies and high altitude make the park a popular site for stargazing; temperature and weather change rapidly, so carry warm clothing even in summer.

How to Get to Teide National Park #
-
By car: Teide National Park is reached from both north and south of Tenerife. From Santa Cruz de Tenerife the drive to the park is roughly 50-60 km (about 1-1.5 hours) and from Tenerife South Airport it is shorter (typically around 40-60 minutes depending on route). Main mountain access roads include TF-21 (from the south/Vilaflor) and TF-24 (from the north/La Orotava); follow signs for Parque Nacional del Teide and Parador.
-
By public transport: TITSA interurban buses serve the park from towns such as Puerto de la Cruz and the south coast (check TITSA schedules; public lines that serve the area include services such as the 342/348 depending on season). The Teleférico del Teide station and the Parador are reached by vehicle or these bus services; from the cable car car park it is a short walk to the station.
Tips for Visiting Teide National Park #
- Book the Teleférico del Teide (cable car) tickets in advance for your preferred time slot and, if you plan to reach the actual Pico del Teide summit, apply for the separate summit access permit well ahead-the cable car does not grant summit access.
- Visit very early morning or late afternoon to avoid mid-day clouds and coach crowds; early starts also improve your chance of clear skies for views down to the coast and across the islands.
- Check the TF‑21 road and cable car operating status before you go-weather, volcanic safety checks, or maintenance closures are common and can change access on short notice.
