Teatro Olimpico
Theater Renaissance theater in Vicenza with permanent scenic perspective
Built to Palladio’s designs and completed with Vincenzo Scamozzi’s stage, the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza preserves a 16th-century indoor theatre with its famous wooden trompe-l’oeil stage set-an attraction for architecture and theatre history.
The Teatro Olimpico is a 16th-century indoor theatre in Vicenza, Veneto, Italy, designed by Andrea Palladio and completed after his death; it was finished in the 1580s and is the oldest surviving Renaissance theatre building.
The theatre is best known for its permanent scenic stage set of perspectival streets and a distant vista, a single-stage scheme that creates a forced perspective illusion across several vanishing points. The interior is compact with tiered seating around a raised stage and ornate classical architectural decoration; the stage set dates from the theatre’s completion and remains its principal visual highlight.
Andrea Palladio drew the original designs in the 1580s; after his death Vincenzo Scamozzi completed the building and executed the stage scenery. The theatre was constructed for the Accademia Olimpica and has been preserved as an architectural and theatrical monument since the late 16th century.
The Teatro Olimpico sits in central Vicenza, a short walk from the city’s historic centre and the Basilica Palladiana. Vicenza is roughly 60 kilometres west of Venice and the theatre is accessible by road and regional rail.
- Visiting tips: Tickets for guided visits are limited and performances use the original stage set, so check schedules in advance.
