Teatro Arriaga is a late-19th-century municipal theatre in Bilbao, Basque Country, named for the composer Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga and opened in 1890.
The building functions as a multi-purpose performance venue hosting opera, theatre, dance and concerts; it occupies a central location close to the Nervión river and Bilbao’s old town. The façade and auditorium are among the theatre’s most visited features.
Constructed in the late 19th century, it has served as Bilbao’s principal municipal theatre and has undergone restoration work during the 20th century to repair damage and update facilities.
The theatre sits in central Bilbao near the Casco Viejo and the river estuary, within easy walking distance of the city centre and about 10 km from Bilbao Airport.
