Te Manga
Mountain Highest peak of Rarotonga, volcanic island summit
Rising over Rarotonga, Te Manga is the island’s highest point and a focus for steep rainforest hikes and ridge walks. Travelers climb for panoramic Pacific views and to experience dense native vegetation on well-worn trails.
Te Manga is the highest peak on Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, rising to approximately 652 metres and forming the steep, rainforest-covered central ridge of the island. It is the island’s prominent topographic feature and a landmark visible from much of Rarotonga.
Trails climb through dense tropical forest toward the summit and offer island and lagoon views on clear days; the terrain is steep and can be slippery, so climbs are relatively demanding. The peak is a volcanic remnant and part of the island’s volcanic geology, and its slopes support the island’s principal native forest habitats.
Te Manga sits in the interior of Rarotonga, inland from main coastal settlements such as Avarua and the island’s lagoon. Access to trailheads is from roads around the island and by short tracks leading into the central ridge.
- Highest point: At about 652 metres above sea level, it is the highest point on Rarotonga and the Cook Islands, dominating the island's central ridge and rainforest cover.
