Tavoro Waterfalls is a multi-tiered waterfall system on Taveuni island in Fiji, located inside Bouma National Heritage Park. It is one of the island’s principal natural attractions and is known locally for its series of cascades and plunge pools.
The site consists of three main cascades often referred to as Lower, Middle and Upper falls, connected by marked walking tracks through rainforest. The lower fall has a popular swimming pool and picnic area, while the higher tiers are reached by steeper trails and offer viewpoint platforms and quieter pools.
These waterfalls are natural features of Taveuni and lie within protected parkland managed to conserve rainforest and freshwater habitats. The falls have long been significant to local communities and are now managed as part of the island’s conservation and tourism infrastructure.
Located on the eastern side of Taveuni, the falls are reached from the island’s main settlements, with the village of Somosomo serving as the usual access point for visitors. Taveuni sits in northern Fiji and is served by boat and air links from other Fijian islands.
- Three tiers: Consists of three distinct cascades within a protected rainforest reserve, often referenced as Lower, Middle and Upper falls.
- Access and swimming: Accessible via marked walking tracks inside the park and commonly visited for swimming in the lower plunge pools and short nature walks.
What to See #
- Lower Falls: Forms the lowest and most accessible pool and cascade, commonly used for swimming and picnics and reached by the shortest marked track from the park entrance.
- Middle Falls: A mid-level cascade reached by a short uphill trail, offering quieter swimming spots and a small plunge pool below the main drop.
- Upper Falls: The highest cascade, reached by a longer trail and lookout points, providing views back down the valley over the lower tiers.
