Tavira Travel Guide
City Historic town in Algarve region of Portugal
Crossed by the Gilão river, Tavira pairs whitewashed churches and a 16th-century castle with ferry rides to Ilha de Tavira’s beaches, salt pans and fish restaurants along narrow cobbled alleys.
Why Visit Tavira? #
Tavira’s appeal lies in its mix of elegant Old Town streets, the stone Roman bridge and riverfront cafés that lead toward the sandbanks of Ilha de Tavira and the Ria Formosa nature reserve. Seafood kitchens serve Algarve classics such as cataplana and octopus, and the town’s calendar of festas and music nights brings local culture into narrow alleys after dusk. Strolling between churches, plazas and waterfront viewpoints feels like a refined coastal escape with easy access to beaches and islands.

How to Get to Tavira
Tavira is on Portugal's Algarve rail line and is most conveniently reached via Faro Airport or by train from Lisbon/Faro. The town is compact and easy to explore on foot; the train and regional buses are the best options for travel along the Algarve.
Faro Airport (FAO): Faro is the closest airport to Tavira, about 30-40 km west. From Faro Airport you can take a taxi to Faro train station (≈10-15 minutes, ~€10-€15) and then a Linha do Algarve regional train to Tavira (Estação de Tavira); the train journey is about 30-40 minutes and typical single fares are in the region of €2-€4. Alternatively, local buses and private transfers run between Faro Airport and Tavira; buses take roughly 40-60 minutes depending on route and stops.
Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS): You can fly into Lisbon and travel to Tavira by rail or bus. Trains from Lisbon (Oriente) to Faro take about 2.5-3 hours on Intercidades/Alfa services (tickets typically €20-€35) and you then change at Faro for a short regional connection to Tavira (≈30-40 minutes, ~€2-€4). Long‑distance buses from Lisbon to the Algarve are another option and can be competitive on price and schedule (roughly 3.5-4.5 hours).
Train: Tavira is served by Estação de Tavira on the Linha do Algarve. Regional trains connect Tavira with Faro (~30-40 minutes, about €2-€4) and westwards toward Lagos. Trains are reliable for intertown travel; buy tickets at stations or on CP’s website.
Bus: Regional buses (EVA Transportes and others) link Tavira with Faro, Olhão and other Algarve towns; a Faro-Tavira bus takes roughly 40-60 minutes and fares are typically in the €3-€6 range. Longer-distance coach services (Rede Expressos) connect Lisbon and other major cities to the Algarve - timetables and prices vary but Lisbon-Faro fares are commonly €15-€30 and you can then use local services to Tavira.
