Tarraco
Archaeological Site Roman provincial capital with extensive archaeological remains
Tarraco (modern Tarragona) retains Roman remains: an amphitheatre by the sea, walls and a forum; tourists visit archaeological sites, the cathedral, and the Mediterranean promenade.
Tarraco is the Roman name for the city now called Tarragona in Catalonia, Spain; its archaeological ensemble comprises the remains of an important Roman provincial capital and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Tarraco was established as a Roman centre in the Republican and Imperial periods and served as an administrative capital for the surrounding province. Over centuries the city evolved, with Roman monuments reused and adapted in later medieval and modern urban development; 19th and 20th century excavations documented and conserved many key structures.
The Roman remains are located in present-day Tarragona on the northeastern Spanish coast, with principal monuments concentrated in the old town near the seafront and on the hill known as Part Alta.
- UNESCO site: The archaeological ensemble is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with Roman remains woven into Tarragona's modern old town and accessible on foot.
- Visiting note: Many Roman remains are set into public areas of the city, so visits are combined with exploring the upper town (Part Alta) and museum collections that display finds from excavations.
What to See #
- Amphitheatre: The Roman amphitheatre on the Tarragona seafront, a large coastal arena where gladiatorial games were staged in the Roman period and whose ruins are integrated into the modern city.
- Circus and forum: The Roman circus and the urban core of the former provincial capital, with traces of the forum, administrative buildings and roads scattered through the old town.
- Roman walls and defences: Remaining sections of the Roman city walls and towers that define parts of the medieval hilltop district and are visible within the contemporary streetscape.
