The site is best known for the short Taranaki Falls Walk - a roughly 2.8 km loop through native forest that finishes at the waterfall viewpoint. The track includes boardwalks and bridges and offers views of the 20 metre cascade and surrounding volcanic terrain. Hikers also get views toward the park’s volcanic peaks on clear days.
The falls flow where stream water moves over a former lava flow and cliff, a product of volcanic activity in the Tongariro volcanic complex. The route and viewing points were established for public access and recreation as part of the park’s track network.
Taranaki Falls sits within central North Island’s Tongariro National Park, on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu. It is accessed from park roads and walking tracks in the Whakapapa/Tongariro area of the national park.
