How to Get to Taquile Island

Taquile Island (Isla Taquile) sits in Lake Titicaca and is reached by boat from Puno. The usual route is to fly into Juliaca (JUL) or arrive by bus/train to Puno, then take a boat from Puno's port for the island crossing.

By Air

Juliaca Airport (JUL): The nearest airport for access to Lake Titicaca is Juliaca (Inca Manco Cápac), about 45-60 minutes by road from Puno. From Juliaca you commonly travel to Puno by taxi or bus and then continue by boat to Taquile Island; the road transfer JUL→Puno takes about 45-60 minutes and taxis or shared shuttles cost roughly PEN 20-50.

Juliaca / Juliaca→Puno: Many travellers fly into Juliaca and then take the short road link to Puno (bus or taxi) before boarding boats across Lake Titicaca to the islands.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no regular passenger rail service onto Taquile Island.

Boat from Puno: Taquile Island is reached by boat from Puno’s port (Plaza de Armas/Plaza Constitución area) on Lake Titicaca. Tourist boats usually take 2-3 hours round-trip depending on stops and the type of craft; common prices for organised tourist boats are in the range of PEN 30-70 per person for the crossing (may include a guide or entry fees), while private boat hires are more expensive.

How to Get Around Taquile Island #

Taquile Island is reached by boat from Puno; most visitors take a day‑boat or organised tour from the Puno harbour. Once on the island there are no motor vehicles - travel is on foot along steep stone paths and steps, so be prepared for a fair bit of climbing. Bring sensible shoes, water and some cash (local sellers don’t always take cards). Trips between Puno and Taquile typically form part of half‑ or full‑day excursions, so book a reputable boat operator.
