Tannenberg Memorial
Monument Former World War I memorial site with controversial history
Site of a former World War I memorial complex in northeastern Poland; historians and visitors examine the landscape and local museums to trace the site’s contested 20th‑century history.
The Tannenberg Memorial was a German World War I monument located near the village of Stębark (formerly Tannenberg) in what is now Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, Poland. It was erected in the interwar period to commemorate the 1914 German victory at the Battle of Tannenberg.
The site today consists principally of ruins and landscaped remnants of the original complex; surviving elements are limited and the location is visited for historical interest rather than intact architecture. Interpretive material and local displays explain the memorial’s role in 20th-century German and Central European history.
Built by German authorities in the 1920s to commemorate the 1914 battle, the memorial later became associated with Paul von Hindenburg, whose remains were interred there in the 1930s. After World War II the structure was dismantled by occupying forces and subsequent Polish authorities and much of it no longer stands.
The site sits in northeastern Poland near the village of Stębark in the Masurian region, within Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. It is set in a rural landscape of fields and small woods rather than an urban setting.
