The Tanga Islands are a small group of islands in Papua New Guinea’s New Ireland Province, located off the northeastern coast of New Ireland. They form a compact island group characterized by steep terrain and reef-fringed shores.
Local communities on the islands practice subsistence agriculture, fishing and small-scale cash crops, with traditional languages and village structures. Marine resources and reefs play an important role in daily life and local economies.
The islands lie in the Bismarck Sea region north of New Ireland, within the provincial administrative framework of New Ireland Province. Access is typically by local boat from larger centres on New Ireland.
- Volcanic islands with reefs: The islands are volcanic in origin and are surrounded by reefs that support local fisheries and nearshore coral systems.
