Tambomachay
Archaeological Site Inca ceremonial baths with precise stone fountains
Just outside Cusco, Tambomachay preserves Inca aqueducts, terraces and ritual baths; visitors inspect carved stone channels and pair the short visit with nearby ruins along the Cusco circuit.
Tambomachay is an Inca archaeological site just outside Cusco known for its stone aqueducts, canals and small cascades - features that have led to its local name as the Inca ‘bath’ complex. The site is commonly included on circuits of nearby ceremonial centres.
A series of terraced stone platforms, finely cut aqueducts and ritual fountains set against a hill slope; water flows through channels and small basins that demonstrate controlled hydraulic design. The compact site is easy to walk and offers close-up views of Inca masonry and waterworks.
Attributed to the Inca period, Tambomachay is believed to have had a ritual or ceremonial function connected to water worship, though exact uses remain subject to interpretation. The site was part of a network of nearby ceremonial centres serving Cusco and its surroundings.
Located a short distance from Cusco along the road toward the Sacred Valley, Tambomachay sits near other Inca sites such as Puka Pukara and Sacsayhuamán on the northeastern approaches to the city.
- Water engineering: The site features finely worked stone water channels and carved niches, so close observation of the masonry reveals deliberate hydraulic design.

Tambomachay is close to Cusco (roughly 6-8 km northeast of the city center) and is commonly visited as part of Cusco’s short archaeological circuit. It’s a 15-25 minute taxi ride from Plaza de Armas or reachable by local colectivos running on the route toward Pisac.
There is a small car park and the site is a short 5-10 minute walk from where vehicles stop.
