Main image

Tambo Colorado is an Inca-period adobe administrative complex on the southern Peruvian coast in the Department of Ica, notable for surviving polychrome wall painting and rectilinear layout dating to the Inca era.

The site contains a central plaza surrounded by a sequence of masonry rooms and service buildings, with sections of original painted plaster and restored walls that show red and white pigments. Short walking routes across the ruins allow close inspection of doorways, niches and architectural features; information panels explain the layout and finishing techniques.

Constructed and used during the Inca period as a provincial administrative and waystation, the compound was occupied until the Spanish colonial era and later investigated by archaeologists and conservators during the 20th century. Conservation work has focused on stabilizing adobe structures and conserving painted surfaces.

The complex sits on the arid coastal plain of southern Peru in the Ica region, within the Pisco valley system and accessible by road from towns on the Pan-American corridor. The nearest provincial centres are in the Department of Ica.

  • Polychrome adobe: Notable for unusually well-preserved painted adobe walls with red, white and black pigments visible on surviving façades.
  • Visitor note: Located on the coastal plain of southern Peru; exposed site with little shade so plan visits for cooler morning or late-afternoon hours.
