Talayotic Menorca

Talayotic Menorca is a collection of prehistoric archaeological sites on the island of Menorca in the Balearic Islands, representing the Talayotic culture of the late prehistoric period. The property includes megalithic towers, communal tombs and ritual enclosures characteristic of the island’s prehistoric communities.

Stone monuments are widespread across the island and include talayots - large circular or square towers - as well as naveta funerary monuments and taula sanctuaries with T-shaped stone arrangements. Many of these structures are directly accessible in the landscape and can be visited as discrete archaeological sites.

Several well-preserved examples, including the navetas and taulas, illustrate funerary and ritual practices, while talayots reveal aspects of settlement planning and communal architecture. Interpretive materials at principal sites explain their form and function.

The Talayotic culture developed in the first millennium BCE and left an extensive record of stone-built monuments and settlements that continued into the later Iron Age. The island’s megalithic architecture evolved locally to form the distinctive talayots, navetas and taulas.

The sites are distributed across the island of Menorca in the Balearic archipelago of Spain, clustered in areas of prehistoric settlement and visible from rural roads and walking routes.

What to See #

• Talayots: Stone tower structures known as talayots, circular or square megalithic constructions that served as watchtowers, communal buildings or focal points in settlement layouts. Many are visible as freestanding ruins across the island.
• Navetas: Navetas, distinctive boat-shaped megalithic funerary monuments used for communal burials in the island's prehistoric period; the best-known example is Naveta des Tudons. These structures are among the most recognisable prehistoric monuments on Menorca.
• Taulas: Taulas, T-shaped stone monuments set within enclosures, associated with ritual and communal activities during the island's Talayotic period and typically found in clusters with other settlement features.
