Budapest’s Sziget is a multi-stage, multi-genre music and cultural festival that bills itself as the ‘Island of Freedom’. It grew out of a student island event in the early 1990s and has expanded into one of Europe’s biggest week-long urban festivals held on Obuda Island in the Danube.

Across the island you’ll find a mix of large headliner stages, specialist tents for electronic and alternative music, art installations, theatre, workshops and a busy campsite village. The atmosphere is international and party-minded by night, and surprisingly varied by day with family programmes, street performance and cultural showcases.

Sziget runs every August for about seven days; dates shift slightly year to year but the festival consistently occupies a full week in early to mid-August. There is a rhythm of daytime cultural programming and DJ sets, with major headline concerts scheduled on several of the main evenings.

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport is the nearest international airport; from the airport use airport bus, train or taxi to the city centre then public transport or a short taxi ride to Obuda Island. Aim to arrive in Budapest at least a day before the festival starts to collect wristbands and orient yourself; book travel and accommodation well in advance.

• Carry your passport or national ID and the printed or digital ticket and keep the festival wristband secure.
• Pack earplugs, a lightweight rain jacket and comfortable shoes - summer heat by day and late-night damp can both occur.
• Bring a refillable water bottle and sunscreen; drinking water and refill points are typically available but queues form during hot spells.
• Be vigilant for pickpockets in crowded areas and use a small money belt or zippered pockets for valuables.
• If camping, bring a sturdy tent, a small lock for zips and a torch; book camping passes early as they sell out separately.
• Plan travel and accommodation ahead: central Budapest hotels fill up, and public transport to the island is busy during headline shows.
