Sylt is a North Sea island in Germany’s Schleswig-Holstein state, noted for long sandy beaches, dune landscapes and a strong tourism industry. The island stretches roughly 38 kilometres and covers around 99 square kilometres, and it has a mix of resort towns and protected coastal habitats.
The spa and resort facilities of Westerland, the upscale village of Kampen, the northern tip around List and walking and birdwatching along the Wadden Sea shore, part of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. The island is a popular destination for beach recreation, cycling and sea-bird observation.
Sylt is a barrier island formed by marine and aeolian processes and developed as a seaside resort from the 19th century onwards. The Hindenburgdamm causeway, opened in 1927, provided the first fixed rail link to the mainland and transformed access and tourism.
The island lies off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein near the Danish border and is reached by rail over the Hindenburgdamm, by ferry and by air. Much of its western shore faces open North Sea beaches while the eastern side borders the tidal flats of the Wadden Sea.

- List: Northernmost town close to the Ellenbogen peninsula, serving as a gateway to natural areas and ferry links to the Danish island of Rømø.
- Hörnum: Small village at the southern tip of the island with beaches, a lighthouse and coastal cliffs popular for walking.
- Hindenburgdamm: An 11-kilometre rail causeway linking the island to the German mainland at Niebüll; it carries rail traffic only and is the island's fixed link.
How to Get to Sylt #
Sylt is reached by rail or by road/auto-ferry via the Hindenburgdamm causeway. Drive to Niebüll on the mainland and take the SyltShuttle (auto train) across the causeway, or board regular passenger trains (Deutsche Bahn and regional operators) that run through Niebüll to Westerland (Sylt). There are direct trains from Hamburg to Westerland.
If driving from Hamburg to the Niebüll ferry/train terminal, plan roughly 150-180 km on the A7/A23 (about two to three hours depending on traffic). Westerland station is a short walk (around 5-10 minutes) from the town centre and main beaches.
Tips for Visiting Sylt #
- Arrive by rail over the Hindenburgdamm to Westerland-trains are convenient and drop you in the island's main hub for onward buses and bike hires.
- If you want fewer crowds than Westerland, head to the northern tip (List) or the quieter southern beaches around Hörnum and Rantum outside peak summer weeks.
- Visit Kampen's red cliffs early or late in the day to avoid the midday influx and to catch the best light on the shoreline and dune landscapes.
Best Time to Visit Sylt #
Sylt is most pleasant in summer (June-August) for beach and outdoor activities, with May and September as quieter alternatives.
