Sydney Opera House
Theater Iconic performing-arts venue with distinctive sail-like shells
On Sydney Harbour, the Opera House’s shell-like roofs house multiple stages and restaurants; visitors take guided tours, book performances, photograph the building from the harbour and combine visits with Harbour Bridge climbs or ferry rides.
Sydney Opera House is a multi-venue performing arts centre on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon and officially opened in 1973. Its distinctive series of white shell-like roofs make it one of the most recognisable 20th-century buildings and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The complex contains multiple performance venues including the large Concert Hall and the Joan Sutherland Theatre, together hosting a wide range of opera, theatre, dance and music events. The Concert Hall seats around 2,700 people and the building stages thousands of performances each year.
Construction began in 1959 and involved innovative engineering and prolonged design and construction phases before completion in 1973; the project is noted for its technical and artistic ambition. The site functions as both a working performing arts centre and a major tourist destination.
Situated on the tip of Bennelong Point, the Opera House sits immediately adjacent to Circular Quay and the central business district and is reachable by ferry, bus and on foot from downtown Sydney.
- Guided tours: Guided tours run daily and provide access to backstage areas, architecture briefings and historical context; book ahead for peak season.
- Photo spots: Classic photo viewpoints are from the ferry crossing Circular Quay and from Mrs Macquarie's Chair in the Royal Botanic Garden for framed harbour shots.
What to See #
- Concert Hall: The largest indoor performance space, hosting symphony concerts and major events with seating for roughly 2,700 people and a large pipe organ.
- Joan Sutherland Theatre: A principal lyric theatre used for opera and ballet performances with tiered seating and stage facilities for large-scale productions.
- Utzon Room: A smaller multi-purpose performance room named for the building's architect, used for chamber music, talks and intimate recitals.
- Forecourt: The external forecourt and promenade area that hosts free public events and provides close-up views of the building's shell forms on the harbour edge.

Tips for Visiting Sydney Opera House #
- For unobstructed photos and far fewer people, head to Mrs Macquarie's Chair at dawn - it gives the classic Opera House silhouette framed against the harbour.
- Book a guided backstage tour or tickets for a performance in advance if you want interior or acoustic experiences; those opportunities are limited and sell out for popular shows.
- Walk the lower concourse and the adjacent Royal Botanic Garden paths for alternative angles and quieter viewpoints that most day visitors skip while staying on the main forecourt.
