The valley has been a transit route since antiquity and has seen successive development of roads, railways and tunnels across the modern era; its towns grew around these transport links and local trade.
Geographically the valley lies west of the city of Turin in Piedmont and extends toward the French border in the western Alps, encompassing a mix of valley floor settlements and high mountain passes.
- Transport corridor: Contains major Alpine transport corridors and mountain passes, making it an important route between Italy and France.

- Explore smaller side valleys and lesser-known hamlets off the main road to escape the busier, well-known sites - local tourist offices in valley towns can point you to quieter walks and mountain passes.
