Sumaco is a distinctive, isolated volcanic peak in Napo Province in eastern Ecuador noted for its ecological distinctiveness and rich biodiversity. The mountain rises to roughly 3,990 metres above sea level.
The area is valued by naturalists and birdwatchers for cloud forest habitats and a high number of endemic species found on the volcano’s slopes. Trails and guided treks bring visitors into montane forest zones that contrast with adjacent Andean ranges.
Sumaco is a volcanic massif whose geology and isolated position have produced unique ecological communities; it has not been prominent in recent documented eruptions.
The volcano sits on the eastern side of the Andean cordillera in Napo Province, in the eastern foothills of the Ecuadorian Andes.
