Main image

Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) is a distinctive granite peak at the mouth of Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro, rising about 396 meters above sea level and served by one of the world’s earliest urban cable-car systems. The site is a landmark for Rio and offers prominent city and bay vistas.

From the lower terrace of Morro da Urca and the summit of Sugarloaf visitors get panoramic views across Copacabana, the bay, Niterói and the Christ the Redeemer statue. The ride is in two cable-car stages and the viewpoints include lookout terraces, short trails and cafes that cater to large numbers of tourists.

The cable car that connects the city to the peaks was inaugurated in 1912 and has been upgraded several times while remaining a signature transport and tourist attraction. The granite massifs have long been a navigational landmark and a popular climbing venue.

Located in the Urca neighborhood at the entrance to Guanabara Bay in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro, Sugarloaf is easily reached from central Rio and is beside the historic harbor area.

  • Cable car history: The historic cable car system opened in 1912 and still carries visitors in two stages from the Urca neighborhood up to the Sugarloaf summit, offering short panoramic stops.
  • Best time and practical tip: Sunset and clear early mornings provide the best light for photography - expect large crowds at peak times and limited parking in Urca, so allow extra time to access the site.
