Su Nuraxi (Barumini)

Su Nuraxi of Barumini is a Bronze Age Nuragic complex on Sardinia and one of the best‑preserved examples of the island’s prehistoric tower structures. The site is recognized for its scale and state of preservation and is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The monument’s core is a central multi‑storey nuraghe surrounded by a ring of smaller towers and a wider village of stone huts and alleys, giving a clear picture of settlement and defensive architecture. Walkways and interpretive signage allow visitors to follow the layout of the central fortress and the adjacent domestic areas.

Constructed in the second millennium BCE during the Nuragic culture, the complex underwent phases of building and enlargement reflecting social and defensive needs across centuries. Major archaeological excavations and restorations in the 20th century clarified the site’s plan and reinforced standing structures for public viewing.

Set near the modern town of Barumini in central‑southern Sardinia, the site sits on low hills in a rural landscape and is reachable from Cagliari and other Sardinian towns by road.
