Stopera
Theater Amsterdam complex housing city hall and opera house
On Amsterdam’s waterfront, the Stopera complex combines the city hall with the Dutch National Opera & Ballet; visitors attend performances, walk nearby canals and markets and photograph the modern façade.
Stopera is the combined opera house and municipal complex in central Amsterdam, Netherlands, known for housing both the city administration and a major national opera company. The opera house portion opened in 1986 and the name is a contraction of the Dutch words for city hall (stadhuis) and opera.
The building contains the city’s municipal offices and the main home of the Dutch opera and ballet company, with public foyers, ticketing and performance spaces. The complex sits on the Amstel waterfront, so many visitors approach it from the canal quays and nearby tram stops.
Construction took place in the early 1980s and the finished complex opened in the mid-1980s; its development was a major civic project linking cultural and municipal functions in a single riverside site. The exterior and interior combine office and theatre architecture rather than being a single-purpose historic theatre.
The Stopera stands on the eastern bank of the River Amstel in Amsterdam’s central district, adjacent to the Waterlooplein area and within easy walking distance of the old Jewish quarter and central canal ring. Public transport connections include nearby tram and metro stops for access from across the city.
- Dual function: The complex combines civic functions and a major cultural venue under one roof, which is the origin of its portmanteau name.
- Best viewing points: Good views of the building and its reflection in the water are available from the opposite bank of the Amstel and from nearby canal bridges, especially at dusk when stage lighting is visible.
What to See #
- Dutch National Opera & Ballet: Contains the national company for staged opera and ballet productions and a large performance auditorium that hosts season programming for opera, ballet and touring productions. The opera house portion of the complex opened in 1986.
- Amsterdam municipal offices: Houses municipal offices and city administration functions for Amsterdam in a modern civic wing attached to the performance building; the municipal component was added as part of the same development in the 1980s.
How to Get to Stopera #
The Stopera occupies a central spot on the Amstel river in Amsterdam. From Amsterdam Centraal it is a 10-15 minute walk along the pedestrian-friendly quays, or take tram lines 4, 9, 14, 16, 24, or 25 to the Waterlooplein/Stopera stops. The area is also well served by bicycle routes and riverside footpaths.
Tips for Visiting Stopera #
- Walk around the back of the complex at dusk for a cleaner photo of the Stopera silhouette against the Amstel - the river reflection improves the composition.
- Check the opera and ballet schedules weeks in advance; last-minute tickets for performances sometimes appear at box office returns.
- The building complex houses both the city hall and the National Opera & Ballet - expect a security checkpoint for evening performances.
