Stoclet Palace
Palace Early 20th-century mansion famed for Klimt mosaic interiors
Josef Hoffmann’s Stoclet Palace in Brussels is a UNESCO‑listed early 20th‑century Vienna Secession mansion. Architecture enthusiasts study its façade, interior ornament and the Wiener Werkstätte detailing-access is limited and often by guided visit.
Stoclet Palace (Palais Stoclet) in Brussels is a private residence and major example of early 20th-century modernist design by Josef Hoffmann, completed in the early 1910s. It is celebrated for its total-design approach combining architecture, interiors and decorative arts.
The building is known for its bespoke interiors and decorative programmes produced by the Wiener Werkstätte, including mosaics and inlaid finishes. Although the palace is a private property and not generally open for full public access, its exterior and garden are of architectural interest and the design is widely studied.
Commissioned by the Belgian financier Adolphe Stoclet, the house was built between about 1905 and 1911 and represents a deliberate Gesamtkunstwerk - a complete work of art uniting architecture, interior design and furnishings. It remained a private residence and has been the subject of conservation efforts in recognition of its international importance.
The palace stands within the Brussels region and is part of the city’s early 20th-century suburban fabric, accessible from central Brussels by road and public transport.
- Architect and date: Designed by Josef Hoffmann and built for the industrialist Adolphe Stoclet between 1905 and 1911, the house is a landmark of the Wiener Werkstätte and early modernist architecture.
