Museum Museum documenting East Germany's Stasi secret police
The Stasi Museum in Berlin occupies former Ministry of State Security offices; visitors tour cells and exhibits documenting East Germany’s surveillance apparatus and everyday life under the GDR.
The Stasi Museum in Berlin is a museum dedicated to the Ministry for State Security (Stasi) of the former German Democratic Republic. It is located in the former headquarters and associated buildings and presents exhibitions on the Stasi’s organisation, operations and impact on East German society.
Exhibits include original offices, documents, surveillance equipment and interpretive displays that explain how the state security apparatus operated. The museum documents both the structures of control and the effects on individuals and communities.
After German reunification the former Stasi sites were preserved and converted for public education and memorial purposes, with the museum established to maintain the historical record and support research and public understanding.
The museum is situated in Berlin’s Lichtenberg district in buildings that were part of the Stasi complex.
