Stari Ras is the archaeological and historic site of the medieval fortified capital of the Serbian state, located in central Serbia near Novi Pazar. It is one of the earliest Serbian political centres and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing that includes nearby Sopoćani.
Visitors encounter exposed stone walls, fortress ruins and the foundations of medieval buildings rather than a single intact monument. The site is an open archaeological area with interpretive signage and visible stratigraphy from successive occupation phases.
The fortified settlement developed from the early medieval period and served as a political and ecclesiastical centre through the Middle Ages; defensive works, churches and habitations were constructed and modified over several centuries. Archaeological work and conservation have focused on the fortress and ecclesiastical remains.
Stari Ras lies a short distance from the modern town of Novi Pazar in the Raška region, positioned on a strategic ridge in the landscape of central Serbia.

How to Get to Stari Ras #
Stari Ras is located just outside the town of Novi Pazar. From Novi Pazar town center take a local taxi or a regional minibus toward the nearby Raška area - the site is roughly 7-10 km from Novi Pazar and a 10-20 minute drive; there is a small parking area and a short 5-15 minute walk from the road to the main ruins.
Tips for Visiting Stari Ras #
- Aim for early morning or late afternoon light-these times are quieter for photography and the low sun highlights the ruins' textures.
- Approach from Novi Pazar (follow local signs toward Stari Ras/Sopoćani) and allow time to walk between dispersed ruins rather than expecting a single compact site.
- Combine your visit with nearby Sopoćani Monastery and the small local museum; the two sites are part of the same UNESCO ensemble and are often visited together.
