Stanserhorn
Mountain Swiss mountain with historic funicular and panoramic views
A mountain above Lake Lucerne, Stanserhorn is reached by historic funicular and an open-top cable car. Hikers and day-trippers ride for summit paths, alpine pastures and wide views over Central Switzerland’s lakes and peaks.
Stanserhorn is a 1,898-meter mountain in the canton of Nidwalden in central Switzerland. It is a popular local mountain for day visitors because of its transport connections and summit views.
From the summit there are panoramic views over Lake Lucerne and surrounding Alpine peaks, plus short marked walking trails and a restaurant on the summit plateau. Transport from the valley to the top uses a historic mountain railway in the lower section and an open-top CabriO cable car on the upper section.
A mountain railway and cable car have provided tourist access to Stanserhorn since the 20th century, with upgrades over time to improve capacity and visitor facilities. The introduction of the open-top CabriO gondola on the upper section is a recent development in the site’s transport history.
The mountain sits above the town of Stans in Nidwalden, central Switzerland, and overlooks Lake Lucerne and the surrounding alpine landscape.
- Elevation: The mountain summit reaches 1,898 meters above sea level, providing views across central Switzerland including Lake Lucerne.
- Cable car: An open-top double-deck cable car - known as the CabriO - operates on the upper section and is a distinctive transport feature to the summit.
What to See #
- Summit facilities: A summit plateau with panoramic terraces and a restaurant located at the top station, offering views over Lake Lucerne and surrounding Alpine peaks.
- Access: The historic Stanserhorn Bahn mountain railway and the open-top CabriO cable car that replaces the upper section provide transport from the valley to the summit; the mountain rises to 1,898 meters above sea level.
How to Get to Stanserhorn #
From Lucerne the easiest approach is by train to the town of Stans (regional trains from Luzern take about 20-25 minutes). From Stans station the Stanserhorn-Bahn funicular departs within a short walking distance of the station and connects to the cable car (the open-top “Cabrio” car) up to the summit. By car Lucerne to Stans is about a 20-30 minute drive (around 20-25 km), and there is short on-site walking between the station, valley terminus and the lift.
Tips for Visiting Stanserhorn #
- Take the Stanserhorn Bahn from Stans train station and book an early ascent - the Cabrio open-top cable car is most enjoyable in the morning when visibility is usually clearest and queues are shorter.
- If possible, time your visit on weekdays or outside school holidays; weekends fill up quickly and the summit terrace and restaurant can become crowded at midday.
