Staatsgalerie Stuttgart

The Staatsgalerie Stuttgart is the state art museum of Baden-Württemberg, located in central Stuttgart, Germany. The museum complex comprises the 19th-century Alte Staatsgalerie and the postmodern Neue Staatsgalerie, designed by James Stirling and opened in 1984.

Exhibits span European painting, sculpture and works on paper from the late medieval period to contemporary art, with notable holdings of 19th-century German painting and 20th-century modernism. The Neue Staatsgalerie is itself an architectural draw, with galleries arranged around a glazed atrium and visible external ramps.

The older gallery building dates to the mid-19th century and was expanded and reconfigured over time; the Neue Staatsgalerie was completed in 1984 and significantly raised the museum’s international profile. The complex combines historical exhibition spaces with modern galleries and temporary-exhibition facilities.

The museum sits in central Stuttgart close to the city centre and major public transport connections, making it easily reachable from the main shopping and cultural districts.
