Staatliche Antikensammlungen

The Staatliche Antikensammlungen in Munich is the State Collection of Antiquities housing Greek, Etruscan and Roman art. The museum’s displays focus on ceramics, sculpture and small antiquities from the ancient Mediterranean.

Exhibits include extensive galleries of painted vases, a sequence of Classical and Hellenistic sculptures and cabinets of smaller bronzes, jewelry and minor objects. Many displays illustrate stylistic development from the Archaic period through the Roman Imperial era.

The collection was assembled from royal and state holdings during the 19th century and has been displayed in purpose-designed museum spaces in the Königsplatz complex. The museum remains one of Germany’s principal public collections of classical antiquities.

The building stands on Munich’s Königsplatz, next to the Glyptothek and within the city’s museum quarter north of the central avenues.

• Classical sculptures: Rooms of sculpture display Classical and Hellenistic marble and terracotta works from roughly the 5th century BCE through the Roman Imperial period.
• Small bronzes and minor arts: Cabinets contain small bronzes, jewelry and minor arts dating from the Archaic to the Roman periods, illustrating everyday and ritual objects from across the Mediterranean.
