St. Peter's Square
Square Papal plaza facing St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican
Bernini’s colonnades frame St. Peter’s Square, centered on an Egyptian obelisk and paved for papal ceremonies; pilgrims and tourists gather for audiences, Vatican guards and views of the basilica façade.
St. Peter’s Square is the grand plaza immediately in front of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, redesigned by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the mid-17th century (1656-1667). The square is one of the most important ceremonial spaces of the Roman Catholic Church.
The design features an elliptical piazza embraced by sweeping colonnades, a central ancient Egyptian obelisk placed in the square in 1586, and two monumental fountains. The colonnades are arranged in four rows of Doric columns and are topped by a long sequence of statue figures.
The square functions as the main gathering place for papal audiences, major liturgical celebrations and public events, regularly holding large crowds for Easter, Christmas and papal blessings. Its scale and formal arrangement are intended to symbolically embrace the faithful.
St. Peter’s Square sits directly in front of St. Peter’s Basilica at the heart of Vatican City within central Rome, bounded by the basilica façade to the west and the colonnades opening toward the city.
- Bernini's design: The square was reshaped by Gian Lorenzo Bernini between 1656 and 1667 to create the present elliptical piazza embraced by colonnades.
- Mass gatherings: Large liturgical gatherings and papal events take place here, and the space regularly accommodates tens of thousands of people.

- Fountains: Two monumental fountains flank the obelisk-one by Maderno and a later companion by Bernini-providing focal points within the piazza.
