St. Michael's Church, Hamburg

St. Michael’s Church (Der Michel) is Hamburg’s principal Lutheran landmark, notable for its large copper-clad spire which reaches about 132 metres. The church is one of the city’s most recognizable features and a long-standing focal point for worship and public visits.

The building houses a prominent observation platform at roughly 106 metres that gives wide views over Hamburg and the Port of Hamburg, plus a historic organ and a sizable crypt. Concerts and services are regularly held, and guided visits commonly include the tower and crypt when open to the public.

The present Baroque church dates from the 18th century; earlier versions on the site were rebuilt or replaced after fires and wartime damage. The church has been restored and maintained as both an active parish and a heritage landmark.

St. Michael’s stands in central Hamburg on the northern bank of the Elbe’s inner reaches, within walking distance of the city centre and the harbour area.

• Viewpoint: The tower viewing platform is reached by stairs or an elevator and provides one of the best viewpoints of the city and harbour; weather can limit visibility.
